Extra-Curriculum

The Extra-Curricular programme runs outside the Curricular and Co-Curricular programmes and complements and extends what occurs in those other areas, however it is not integral and students may elect whether to participate. IST’s Extra-Curricular programme allows a student with a particular attitude and aptitude to go further in an area than the Curricular and Co-Curricular programmes allow.

Both Pre-School and Junior School

  • Chess BoardChess Club - IST has both Pre-School and Junior School Chess Clubs led by expert instructors and which meet on Friday afternoons. We compete in Southern Arizona Chess Association ("SACA") inter-scholastic and Arizona state scholastic events. In 2010/2011, IST went to Nationals!
  • Choir - IST has both Pre-School and Junior School Choirs. The JS Choir performs regularly at school and in the community. Both Choirs meet on Tuesdays. New for 2012/2013 - IST will have three Choirs! The JS Choir will be separated into an Upper and a Lower Choir; details to follow.
  • Treble ClefInstrumental Music - individual lessons are available before school every day : Cello, Flute, Guitar, Keyboards, Percussion, Piano, Recorder, Saxophone, Ukelele, Violin and Voice. (Brass and Wind instruments are under consideration.) Three levels are offered : "Exploratory" with lessons once a week which allows students to try an instrument and see if they like it; "Committed" three times a week, twice for lessons and once as a group; "Dedicated" five times a week; one will be an ensemble lesson if numbers allow and practice is expected. Lesson slots are 20 minutes long, with the intention that multiple short lessons will compensate for the inevitable lack of practice. Lessons for parents are also available. Contact us for details. New for 2012/2013 - IST will offer a number of ensembles in guitar, piano, recorder, violin and voice! Contact us for details.
  • SoccerSoccer Club - Five squads, starting from age 3, with the two older squads competing in a local league which requires an appropriate commitment. Practices are held on Thursdays, the younger squads at our main campus and the older at Mansfield Park. Friendly matches against other schools are planned; matches against parents are always popular!

Junior School only

  • Art Club - meets on Fridays.
  • BasketballBasketball Club - the IST Basketball Club is both inter-mural, where any Junior School student can turn up and practise / play, and competitive where we enter a local league which requires a commitment. We have three squads : one for beginners and inter-mural, two for more experienced and league players. Squads practise on Mondays, the Under 8 or J1 / J2 at our main campus and the other two at the Northwest Neighbourhood Centre. Matches against parents are always popular!
  • Dance Club - this club is purely for fun, although students do perform at school. Contact us for updates.
  • Drama Club - temporarily suspended. Contact us for updates.
  • Ensembles - instrumental music ensembles built around similar instruments or similar levels of performance ability. Contact us for updates.
  • Karaoke Club - temporarily suspended. Contact us for updates.
  • Kung Fu Club - this club is for fun! Moms and Dads are welcome to join in the training with their kids. Meets on Tuesdays. Temporarily suspended. Contact us for updates.
  • ScienceScience Club - the Science Club is hands-on and experiment-based and often welcomes visiting experts, especially from the University of Arizona. The Club also competes in the Southern Arizona Regional Science and Engineering Fair; in 2009 we took first place, in 2010 both second place and a special category award and in 2011 a special category award! Meets on Wednesdays.

Extra-Curricular events occur outside the teaching day, and may incur extra fees such as those levied by an outside instructor or by a sports league.
