21-22 April - State Championships
IST are again Arizona champions at K-3, for the second consective year. We also finished seventh at K-1 and eighth at K-5; top ten finishing for all teams. John Henry, Isaac and Robbie won individual trophies.
31 March - Tucson Scholastic Championships
Nic won his section. A further four players qualifed for the State Championships, earning us three "bonus" spots and allowing us to take nineteen in total. More results to come
10 March - Regional Championships
Results to come. Eight players qualifed for the State Championships.
25 February (Rodeo Weekend) Northern Arizona Regional Championships / Regional Qualifier
IST sent a small team this year with only three competing in K-3 and one in K-1. Nonetheless, we finished second in the K-3 team tournament. In the K-3 individual tournament, Robbie finished first, Isaac second (Robbie and Isaac had to play each other for the Northern Arizona title as they were the only two unbeaten players in the final round) and Bobbie finished tenth in his first major tournament. All three plus Lauren, playing in K-1, qualified for the State Championships in Gilbert.
18 February - Scholastic League Championships
Our second-ever team tournament amd a great result for an inexperienced K-3 team which finished second-equal but third on countback. Our K-6 team finished fifth, but only one gameof twenty behind the team which came first! Trevor, Isaac and John Henry won all their games, while Liam and Nic were unbeaten.
4 February - Scholastic League Match 4
IST's first-ever team event! In this event, players are ranked 1 - 4 in their team and play as a team against other teams also ranked 1 - 4. The teams' total results determine the outcome, rather than individual scores, and team trophies only are awarded. IST's K-6 team (one second, two third and one fourth-grader) finished first equal, with Connor and Robbie winning all their games. The K-3 team (with two first, one second and one third-grader) largely playing in only their third or fourth events were unplaced.
20-22 January - Tucson Open
One of IST's poorer displays. While everyone won at least one game, the difference of an Open as opposed to a scholastic event took its toll. Isaac and Robbie won trophies in their sections and Nic and Trevor were placed.
7 January 2012 - State Grade-Level Championships
IST are Arizona Grade 3 Champions! Robbie finished runner-up making him second in Arizona at Grade 3 and top in Tucson. We had a very small team overall and did not field enough players for team awards in G4, G2 or G1, the other levels at which we competed.
3 December - Scholastic League Match #3
For various reasons, most of the team was unavailable. Nevertheless, both our beginners in the K-1 Section playing K-3 won games, and our depleted K-3 team (with only three players instead of the minimum four) finished third in the K-6 section! Congratulations Robbie (four wins) and Isaac (three wins).
3 November - Scholastic League Match #2
A conflict with the Basketball League semi-finals meant IST had only two beginning players in each section - K-1 and K-3. All four played valiantly, but we had to accept defeat this time.
15 October - Scholastic League Match #1
IST won the K-3 Division and finished fifth in K-6; the two-point difference with first place shows the tightness of the field. (There was no K-1 section this time.) We also entered our largest team yet, 15 players, with 6 in their first ever League match. Congratulations Nic for winning all four games.
6-8 May US Elementary National Championships
Both K-1 and K-3 teams played in the Championship ("Open") Sections and so were rated near the bottom of both fields. As a result, under the Swiss system used for pairings, we faced some formidable opponents with many being rated 300 - 700 points higher. The K-1 tournament included some 300 players and K-3 some 250; the K-3 match venue was 100 metres long! In our first ever national championships, IST finished 24th of 36 teams in both sections and was also the highest placed Arizona team.
8-10 April Arizona State Championships
IST are the K-3 State Champions! The team of Connor, Isaac, John Henry, Liam, Miguelangel and Robbie took the title from multiple champion Killip of Flagstaff. Our K-1 team of Algol, Nic, and Trevor ended third in the state in their section.
26 March - Tucson Scholastic Championships
IST took first place in the K - 3 division, the fourth regional scholastic tournament in a row where IST has finished in the top position. Liam won a trophy for five wins out of five matches and Connor earned a trophy for four wins out of five. In the parallel 700 - 999 Championship competition Algol finished fourth.
13 March - IST invitational
A good day for IST. Connor and Nic finished second equal in the U900 section, and Kieran finished second in the U450 section.
5 March - Southern Arizona Regional Championships / State Qualifier
With the ISTPA International Day clash, IST did not enter a team. Nonetheless, Algol, IST's sole representative, took the K-1 Southern Arizona Regional title and qualified for the State Championships in April.
26 February - Northern Arizona Regional Championships / State Qualifier (Flagstaff)
Another excellent result for IST Chess. All four players (Isaac, Nic, Robbie, Trevor) qualified for the Arizona State Championships in April! Robbie finished first and Isaac fifth in the K-3 section, and the IST team finished second of nine teams.
19 February - Southern Arizona League (team) Championships
IST finished first in the K-3 section and second in the K-6 section. This is significant because the IST team which played in the K-6 section are all still K-3 players! In fact, most are in G1 or G2 according to League rules. The IST students played against players who were older and frequently more highly rated.
In K-3, Nic, Micha and Trevor won individual trophies for being undefeated and Connor won a medal for soring three points of a possible four. In K-6, John Henry won an individual trophy for being undefeated and Robbbie a medal for three out of four points.
5 February - Tucson Scholastic League Match #4
This event was cancelled.
22 - 23 January - Tucson Open Scholastics Tournament
Two one-day tournaments. Day One did not go well for IST. On Day Two, Algol and Robbie finished second equal with Algol taking the second-place trophy and Robbie fourth on countback. We now have two players ranked over 900!
16 January - IST invitational
Another smaller tournament. Algol and Robbie finished first equal in their section with John Henry third, and a great result for Kieran who won his with Trevor second.
8 January - Arizona State Grade Level Championships
IST was represented by four players at our first "away" tournament played in Flagstaff - Algol finished second in Kindergarten, Robbie sixth in Grade Two, Nic tenth in Grade One and Isaac sixteenth in Grade Two. IST finished third in Grade Two which is notable as we had only two players in the team, while the other schools had three. These are all state titles.
12 December - IST invitational
A smaller than usual group so regular places were not awarded. Congratulations to Algol, Trevor and Kitar.
4 December - Tucson Scholastic League Match 3
IST took first and fourth place, although the rules of the tournament allowed us only one trophy. This was our second successive first place. Congratulations Algol, Connor, Isaac, John Henry, Kieran, Kitar, Liam, Micha, Nic and Robbie and Coach Matt.
14 November - IST invitational tournament
Twenty players from nine schools participated; IST took a clean sweep of the U900 section (Robbie 1st, Algol 2nd and Isaac 3rd) and top honours in the U450 (Nic 1st). Congratulations to all and thank you to Bookmans Entertainment Exchange for the prizes.
6 November - Tucson Scholastic League Match 2
IST won first place!! Six players won individual trophies. Congratulations to Algol and Robbie (each with four wins), Micha (three wins and a draw) and Connor, Isaac and Nic (three wins).
24 October - IST invitational tournament
Twenty-players from seven schools participated in the first of what wil be many beginners and rookies level tournaments. IST did very well; congratulations to Robbie (first in U900), John Henry (third in U900), Algol (first in U450) and Isaac (2nd in U450). Thank you to Bookmans Entertainment Exchange for their assistance with the prizes.
16 October - Tucson Scholastic League Match 1
Mixed results for IST with most players not playing to their abilities. Congratulations to Algol for finishing fourth in the Primary Section.
Mr Matt Noble
