Values for a Global Society

The curriculum of the International School of Tucson (IST) has as its premise that as we cannot know what tomorrow's world will be like, nor what tomorrow's world will require of its citizens, what our children know will matter less than what kinds of people they are.

We see Values from two perspectives - the Profile of the Learner and his/her Attitudes - and all that happens within the School comes from these :

Learner Profile

  • Balanced
  • Caring
  • Communicator
  • Inquirer
  • Knowledgeable
  • Open-Minded
  • Principled
  • Reflective
  • Risk-Taker
  • Thinker

Learner Attitudes

  • Appreciation
  • Commitment
  • Confidence
  • Co-operation
  • Creativity
  • Curiosity
  • Empathy
  • Enthusiasm
  • Independence
  • Integrity
  • Respect
  • Tolerance

However Values cannot be taught. They must be modeled, incorporated within an activity or reinforced through a Code of Behaviour.Activities must be designed from the Values so that while students are doing  something, they are at the same time acquiring and developing the underlying Value(s).

At IST, we strive to produce the conditions necessary for the inculcation of these Values. For example, when we take a Value such as "Respect" and break it down, we might arrive at "Neatness" which, when on further analysis, breaks down into :

  • Cleaning up after an activity
  • Putting things away
  • Putting things in their right places
  • Sorting things from bigger to smaller, or from older to newer

Similarly, "Respect" also leads to "Punctuality" :

  • Scheduing
  • Telling the time
  • Map-reading
  • Planning a journey
  • Calculating journey time
  • Prioritising
  • Sequencing
  • Reading a timetable

These sub-themes easily translate into learning activities, and in turn into Skills-based lessons.
