Extra-Curriculum

The Extra-Curricular programme runs outside the Curricular and Co-Curricular programmes; it complements and extends what occurs in those other areas however it is not integral and students may elect to participate in an Extra-Curricular activity. IST’s Extra-Curricular programme allows a student with a particular attitude and aptitude to go further in an area than the Curricular and Co-Curricular programmes allow.

Most clubs start Monday 2 August; the first two weeks are for trying them out so that students can see if they enjoy the activity before committing. Instrumental Music starts Monday 16 August with enrolments being taken over the next two weeks.

IST’s Extra-Curriculum consists of :

Both Pre-School and Junior School

  • Chess Club - IST has both Pre-School and Junior School Chess Clubs led by outside expert instructors and which meet on Friday afternoons. We also compete in Southern Arizona Chess Association ("SACA") inter-scholastic events and in 2009 won our first first place trophies!
  • Chinese Club - with Ms Lien joining us as a full-time Chinese teacher, we are unsure as to what will happen to this club in 2010/2011. Contact us for updates.
  • Instrumental Music - individual lessons are available before school every day; Cello, Guitar, Keyboards, Percussion, Piano, Ukelele and Violin are planned for 2010/2011. Two levels are offered - "Exploratory" with lessons once a week which allows students to try an instrument and see if they like it and "Committed" three times a week, twice for lessons and once as a group. Lesson slots are 20 minutes long, with the intention that multiple short lessons will compensate for the inevitable lack of practice.
  • Soccer Club - Five squads are planned, starting from age 3, with the two older squads competing in a local league which will require an appropriate commitment. All squads practise on Thursdays at Mansfield Park. Friendly matches against other schools have been planned; matches against parents are always popular!

Junior School only

  • Art Club - meets on Fridays. Click here for the Advice and Commitment letter.
  • Basketball Club - the IST Basketball Club is largely inter-mural, although we are seeking friendly matches against other schools and we hope next year to enter local leagues. We are planning two squads; both squads practise on Mondays at the Northwest Neighbourhood Centre. Matches against parents are always popular!
  • Choir - the Junior School Choir performs regularly at school and in the community. Meets on Tuesdays.
  • Dance Club - this club is purely for fun, although students do perform at school. Contact us for updates.
  • Karaoke Club- temporarily suspended. Contact us for updates.
  • Kung Fu Club - this club is for fun! Moms and Dads are welcome to join in the training with their kids. Meets on Tuesdays. Click here for the Advice and Commitment letter.
  • Science Club - the Junior School Science Club is hands-on and experiment-based and often welcomes visiting experts, especially from the University of Arizona. The Club also competes in the Southern Arizona Regional Science and Engineering Fair; in 2009 we took first place and in 2010 both second place and a special category award! Meets on Wednesdays.
  • Theatre Club - this club is also purely for fun, although students do perform at school. Meets on Mondays. Click here for the advice and commitment letter.

Extra-Curricular events occur outside the teaching day, and may incur extra fees such as those levied by an outside instructor or by a sports league.
