Teaching at IST is not hierarchical. Teachers and assistants are essentially equal and positions are defined by responsibilty. Historically, our TAs have been trained, qualified and experienced teachers with one exception who was an educational psychologist!
Inside the classroom, the TA teaches, runs activities, leads lessons etc alongside the Teacher and from time-to-time may even replace the teacher. However, s/he is the Assistant and so does more of the preparatory activities such as getting out paint or putting away equipment.
Outside the classroom, the TA comes at 8.00am and leaves at 4.00pm. S/he does not have the after-hours responsibilities of the Teacher such as planning, attending meetings, writing reports, participating in events and supervising extended care.
A Teacher Assistant is not eligible for exchange-teacher visa sponsorship, although s/he may come as the spouse of a visa-holder.
