At a recent Tucson social event, a politically active attendee who is also successful in business, and wealthy because of this success, sneered openly and condemnatorily at the thought of paying for education. To him, it is shocking and appalling and destructive to society that non-public schools exist. He just can not countenance the idea of families paying to educate their own children. Of course, he did not elaborate on this view or provide any rationale. He simply judged and denounced.
The interesting thing about his disapprobation was that this was only a 3 - 5 minute diversion from a litany of where he does find it acceptable to spend his money, inter alia :
So in this person's world view, paying for consumption and ephemeral pleasures is good; paying for a child's education is bad.
Most IST families make very significant lifestyle choices in order to support their decision to invest in their child(ren)'s future and to provide their child(ren) with opportunities that they would not get elsewhere. That in the eyes of this person, and others like him, doing this is wrong but spending money in restaurants and on cars is right is what is shocking and ultimately destructive to society.
