The programme of the International School of Tucson (IST) has as its premise that as we cannot know what tomorrow's world will be like, nor what tomorrow's world will require of its citizens, what our children know will matter less than what kinds of people they are. Secondly, that as what passes for knowledge today is changing so rapidly, what our children know will matter less than what they know how to do.
IST's programme has three parts - the Curriculum, the Co-Curriculum and the Extra-Curriculum.
Curriculum
The curriculum is comprised of two parts : Methodologies and Contents.
Co-Curriculum
The Co-Curriculum occurs alongside the Curriculum, frequently involves people other than IST teachers, and does the following :
- furthers IST’s Vision and Mission
- furthers the curricular goals
- puts curriculum into practice
- implements or explores the curriculum outside the classroom
- provides the depth and opportunity to explore an aspect of something which has been covered in class more generally
- is narrower in focus than what is covered in class and so may have clear parameters, definitions, starting and ending points
Extra-Curriculum
The Extra-Curriculum occurs outside the Curriculum and Co-Curriculum; it complements and extends what occurs in those other areas however it is not integral and students may elect to participate in an Extra-Curricular activity. The IST Extra-Curricular programme allows a student with a particular "attitude and aptitude" to go further in an area than the Curricular and Co-Curricular programmes allow.
